Former NDC MP calls for ban on fan clubs

Agona Swedru, Sept 7, GNA- Mr Samuel Oppong, Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Agona West has reiterated the call on the National Executive to discontinue the establishment of fan clubs and other organs within the Party to ensure peace, stability and transformation.

He said the formation of fan clubs and others caused serious setback for the organisation of the Party, especially in the 2000 Presidential and Parliamentary elections

Mr Oppong, who is an aspiring Parliamentary Candidate, made the call at a fund-raising forum organised by the Agona West Constituency branch of the Party in aid of the Constituency Office as part of preparations for Election 2004.

He said that the majority of the NDC rank and file became "enemies to themselves due to the institution of these clubs" and urged the National, Regional and Constituency Executives to ban the practice. He said this time, the only thing NDC needed was to intensify its campaign and re-package its message to the electorate in order to win the elections.

Mr Oppong cautioned the NDC members, especially National and Regional Executives to refrain from using abusive language when they mount platforms in the electioneering campaign. Dr Isaac Worlanyo, Agona West Constituency Chairman of NDC, announced that the Party would hold constituency delegates conference on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 to select a candidate to contest Election 2004.

He said at the close of the nomination only Mr Samuel Oppong had filed his papers.

Dr Worlanyo called on the supporters of the NDC to unite and work as a team to enable the Party to wrest power from New Patriotic Party.
