The founder and leader of the Greater Consolidated Peoples Party, Daniel Augustus Lartey has stated categorically that his party had lost confidence in the Grand Coalition and was no longer part of it.
According to him, his party would contest the next general elections in 2008 alone without going into an alliance with any political party in the country. Mr Lartey, who was the brain behind the information of the Coalition in 2003, said the coalition had totally failed to produce any meaningful results.
In 2003, the GCPP, Peoples National Convention (PNC) and Every Ghanaian Living Everywhere (EGLE) came together to form the Grand coalition. The three parties went to congress and elected Dr Edward Mahama of PNC as their presidential candidate for the December 2004 elections.
Speaking to The Statesman, Mr Lartey said the Coalition performed abysmally in the 2004 elections to his complete disbelief. According to him, though the GCPP, PNC and CPP shared the ideology and philosophy of Kwame Nkrumah, his party would not enter into an alliance with any of them. "With the past experiences this party has gone through, it will never form any alliance with any party in the country," he stated. He further added that GCPP had the mechanism and machinery to contest the 2008 general elections.
