Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Bossman Asare, has described Ghana’s republican status as a symbol of its sovereignty, indicating that we are responsible for our actions and inactions as a country.
Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News Channel on Multi TV, he said, as a country, we have not shown enough commitment to the development.
Citing as an example, Ghana’s political system, he said governance of the country usually does not harness the best brains from all the political divides, but only from the party in power, hence keeping development in the hands of a few.
This he said, was unlike countries such as Germany and some Scandinavian countries where the situation is otherwise.
He added: “We need selfless leaders who can think outside the box and not enrich themselves at the disadvantage of the people”
Dr. Asare continues, Ghana is not as sovereign as its republican status suggests since we are dictated to by developed countries such as the U.S, China and our markets are flooded by foreign goods, which continues to depress our private sector.
He advised that, Ghana’s republican status should be used as a vehicle to engineer growth to better the lives of its citizens.
