The Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Henry Seidu Daannaa, on Monday reiterated government’s commitment to re-position the chieftaincy institution to contribute meaningfully towards national development.
He said the chieftaincy institution played a crucial role in governance, therefore, government would always seek their concern in decision-making to come out with holistic policies to accelerate national development.
Dr. Daannaa made these remarks when he paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene of Essikadu Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, at his palace at Essikadu, at the start of his five-day working visit to the Western Region.
He said the Chieftaincy Ministry would continue to bridge the gap between government and tradition, hence his determination to put in motion the promise he made last year when he visited the region.
He said the Ministry was on course in dealing with the staffing problem at the traditional councils by posting personnel from the headquarters to districts and traditional councils where their services are most needed.
He said his doors are always open to welcome fresh ideas and suggestions that would improve the administration of the chieftaincy institution in the country.
He assured that, occasionally, chiefs would be taken through sensitization workshops on their rights and responsibilities, saying “it will not be healthy for a society where chiefs are not respected.”
The Omanhene of Essikadu Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, was not happy about the wrongful imitation of foreign culture, neglecting the rich Ghanaian culture.
He, therefore, entreated Ghanaians to be proud of their cultural practices and bequeath them to the younger generation.
At the Shama Traditional Council, Nana Kwamina Wieno II, Acting President of the Shama Traditional Council, appealed to the Minister to use his good office to secure an office for the Council to facilitate its activities.
He expressed the Council’s appreciation to the Chieftaincy Ministry for its support during the final funeral rites of the late paramount chief, Nana Kweku Binnah III.
The Minister and his entourage are expected to visit 22 traditional councils in the region during the tour.
