A former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, has denied ever describing Members of Parliament (MPs) as bootlickers.

Professor Ocquaye is reported to have told XYZ News in an interview that many MPs are losing respect among their constituents because they seem to be bootlicking the presidency instead of developing their careers as legislators.

To stem this, he is said to have suggested that the lawmaking chamber instils what he calls a voting record that showcases the voting pattern of MPs. He was hopeful that when this is done, it will reveal the real principles of legislators and their contribution to the growth of Parliament while exposing lawmakers who he believes lack integrity when it comes to debating and voting on national issues in parliament.

“Parliament should have a voting record not that we all become part of one pack...we don’t have a voting record in Parliament for MPs, I would like it introduced,” the former MP Dome-Kwabenya allegedly said.

But speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s News@6pm, Prof. Ocquaye denied ever granting any interview to the Accra-based commercial radio station and asked them to retract or he “will no longer speak on their platform again”.

“The media must be careful of the wrong information they put out there because it can destroy the nation. They (XYZ) don’t know what they are talking about. It is not true; it is a fabricated story. They should correct their ways or else if they call me I will not respond. I have never granted an interview to them,” Prof Oquaye said.
