Following a brief heated moment in Parliament on Monday, July 22, 2024, which led to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, ordering for the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, to be removed from the Chamber, the MP has expressed dissatisfaction with how he was poorly handled by the marshal.
Giving details as to what transpired moments after Speaker Bagbin issued an order for him to be walked out, in an interview on Okay FM on Tuesday, July 23, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie said the marshal, acting on the orders of the Speaker, forcibly tried to push him out as if he had committed an offence.
According to Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the marshal’s behaviour was inappropriate because he had already packed his belongings after the Speaker’s directive and was in the process of leaving voluntarily.
“My bowing out did not even convince him to rescind on his directive. Some people were misinterpreting that I was resisting to be walked out. Actually, when he (the Speaker) first gave the order, I had already started packing my belongings so there was no resistance.
"It was the marshal who tried to hold my hand to push me out as if I had committed a crime,” he clarified.
Videos of the incident showed Dr. Kwaku Afriyie being forcibly pushed out by the marshal in the process of bowing before the Speaker.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, ordered the removal of Dr. Kwaku Afriyie after he made rude remarks in parliament.
The incident occurred following the Speaker’s announcement of the nomination of new judges to the Supreme Court.
The MP who was not impressed by Speaker Bagbin’s preliminary submission, described his remarks as prejudicial.
Speaker Bagbin, who was not pleased with Dr. Kwaku Afriyie’s comments, ordered the marshal saying, "Marshal, take him out of the House. I will not entertain such disrespect. It lies in my mouth."
