Akua Donkor, Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, has pledged that if she wins the 2024 elections, her administration will finish the Saglemi Housing Project Units and provide public servants with free accommodation.

According to her, public servants play a crucial role in the country, hence her decision to provide them with free accommodation to address the housing challenges they face.

She said she believes that ensuring they have access to comfortable housing without the burden of rent will not only support their well-being but also recognise their contributions to the nation's development.

The Saglemi Housing Project was started by the John Dramani Mahama government in 2012.

A loan of US$200 million was secured to construct an initial 5,000 affordable housing units to be sold to citizens, but as of 2017, only 1,506 units were built, but were not completed.

The projects stalled after the NPP came to power in 2017, citing legal issues.

The government has now resolved to complete the project, indicating that currently, some five private companies have submitted bids to collaborate with them to complete the project.

In an interview with graphic.com.gh, Akua Donkor criticised the NPP government's decision to involve the private sector in completing and operating the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project.

"I am not happy with the NPP government partnering with private companies to finish and manage the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project.

"When I come into power, I will complete the Saglemi Housing Project and allow public servants to live in the apartments for free. They won't pay rent. Even after retirement, their children will inherit the apartments," she stated.

Akua Donkor also announced that she is gearing up for the pending presidential elections in December.

"I am actively preparing for the upcoming presidential elections. I have been very busy lately campaigning and recently undertook a two-week nationwide campaign tour," she remarked.

Despite multiple attempts to secure the presidency in previous elections, she has yet to garner a substantial number of votes.
