Koku Anyidoho, the former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that any presidential candidate for the 2024 elections who avoids a debate on policies is unfit to lead Ghana.
His statement comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, recently challenged former President John Dramani Mahama to a debate on policies and economic issues.
The NPP flagbearer's call has not yet received an official response from former President Mahama. However, Mahama's aide, Joyce Bawah, dismissed the idea of such a debate taking place.
In contrast, Anyidoho has urged the former president to accept the challenge and debate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia if he has viable policies to present to Ghanaians.
In a series of tweets, Anyidoho expressed his views: "I now understand the meaning of 'Anything can happen.' Because anything can happen, we are witnessing JM and his assigns running away from a presidential debate.
"If you believe you have solid alternative policies, why run away from a debate to sell your message? The debate is a MUST."
He further criticized media houses that previously supported presidential debates but are now silent on the issue:
"Is it not interesting how the 'regime change' media houses that used to champion/trumpet Presidential debates in the past are now playing 'mumu' over the matter?
"Whether they like it or not, we shall have at least two Presidential debates before the general elections.
"Ipso facto, any Presidential Candidate who runs away from a Presidential debate must not be allowed to become President of Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana.
"If you can't stand up and debate your ideas, then Ghana doesn't need you to waste our time because we are already chasing time."

Any Presidential Candidate who runs away from a Presidential Debate is NOT fit to be President of Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana 🇬🇭. This country needs re-tooling of our growth trajectory and those who want to lead must meet toe-to-toe for us to test their pulse and intellect.
