Dr. Solomon Fokuo Kwarteng
The Head of the Entrepreneurship and Finance Department at Kumasi Technical University (KSTU), Dr. Solomon Fokuo Kwarteng, has disclosed that the rate of inflation and the state of the economy will play a role in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on the Ohio-based Ghanaian radio station Sky FM, Dr. Fokuo Kwarteng explained that the 2024 elections will be determined by a number of issues, with inflation being one of them.
However, Dr. Fokuo Kwarteng explained that during the decision-making process, Ghanaians will also assess the track record of the candidate from the main opposition party and compare it to the current government before deciding which candidate they will vote for.
Passing judgment on the potential of the inflation rate to swing the election in favor of the opposition, the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Fokuo Kwarteng ruled that the inflation rate and its impact on Ghanaians will not significantly affect the outcome of the elections, as other factors may work in favor of the New Patriotic Party.
"The inflation rate and the economy may affect the elections, but Ghanaians vote for a variety of reasons. Someone may decide to vote against the NPP but will consider the candidate of the alternative before voting. They will check the track record of the main opposition party and how they handled inflation. It may have an effect but not too much effect on the outcome of the elections," he said.
Dr. Kwarteng also commended the government for the measures it has put in place to reduce Ghana’s inflation rate.
He noted that there has been a consistent reduction in the inflation rate, which is a good sign for the government and the NPP as the country heads into the 2024 elections.
