J.S. Addo Unopposed For Council Of State Position

Mr John Saaka Addo, the chairman of Prudential Bank and former governor of the Bank of Ghana, is the sole candidate vying for the position of the Greater Accra Regional representative on the Council of State.

By the close of nominations last week, the incumbent Dr Kofi Amanor Owusu-Ansah, had not sought re-election, leaving Mr Addo unopposed.


The senior citizens in the Northern Region have filed their nominations to contest the election to represent the region on the Council of State.


They are four traditional rulers and a farmer. They include the 72-year-old incumbent, Zoosalilana Naa Thomas Tia Sulemana, Wulugunaba, Naa Prof Sebiyam Nabila, 64, and a 62-year-old farmer, Mr Edward Telley.


The rest, who were both former northern regional ministers in the Convention People?s Party (CPP) and the People?s National Party (PNP) regimes respectively, are Duloglana Ebenezer Adam, 85, and the Kpembewura, Alhaji Ibrahimah Raruna, 65.


Six persons, all males, have filed their nominations in the Western Region to contest the elections for a regional representative on the Council of State.

They are a 64-year-old retired teacher, Mr Francis Nyamikeh Ellom, a 72-year-old agriculturist, Mr Paul Kwabena Damoah, and Awulae Agyefi Kwame ll, a 63-year-old farmer and paramount chief of the Nsein traditional area.


The rest are a 77-year-old retired educationalist, Mr Francis Quansah, and Supi Ebo Bentsi-Enchill, 70, a legal practitioner. Mr Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi Hughes, who was the representative of the region from 2001 was elected the Speaker of Parliament on January 7, 2005.


In the Central Region, three persons, including the incumbent Nana Prah Agyensaim Vl, 61, chief of Assin Kushea and a lawyer by profession, are contesting the slot.


The others are Mr George Kojo Clement, 53, a tutor at the Boa Amponsem Secondary School in Dunkwa-on-Offin, and Mr Ato Essuman, 52, a management consultant based in Accra.


In the Ashanti Region, six candidates, including the incumbent, Mr Benjamin Asonaba Dapaah, had filed their nominations to contest the position.

Other candidates are the paramount chief of Kuntunase,Ogyeabuo Barima Adu Gyamfi, 70, Dr. Edward Prempeh, 64, who is the immediate past presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, and Nana Badu Boakye, 56, also a traditional ruler at Achiase in the Atwima District.


The others are Mr John Emmanuel Amoah, 80, a surveyor, and Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem, paramount chief of the Tepa traditional area, who is also a businessman. He is 42 years.


In the Volta Region, two traditional rulers have filed their nominations to contest the slot. The two, who are also educationists, are Togbe Kpangbatriku lll from Dodome-Aveha in the Ho West constituency and Togbuiga Amenya Fiti V, paramount chief of the Aflao traditional area.


Nana Ogyeabour Akompi Finam ll, the Kadjebihene, represented the region for the past four years.


A retired army officer, three traditional rulers and three retired public servants have filed their nominations to contest the Upper West Region?s slot on the Council of State. They are Brigadier-General Godfrey Naapie Guomil, 65, and Mrs Celestine Bayor, 66, a retired director of the Department of Community Development.

Others are Edwin Cherea Naa Kunfirimuni, 67, a retired chief environmental health officer, Kuoro Kuri-Buktie Limann, 61, paramount chief of the Gwollu traditional area, Kuoro Kyige Mumuni Dimbie ll, paramount chief of Galibaga traditional area, Ninia Doctawie, 54, paramount chief of Zini traditional area and Mr Paschal Baylon Dere, 46, an agriculturist.


Six persons have filed their nominations to contest the slot for the Eastern Region. They include Mr Fred Guggisburg Ofori Atta Asante, 75, the incumbent, who is an industrial relations practitioner.


The others are Nene Sackitey ll, 57, Konor of Manya Krobo, who is also a management and economic consultant, Nana Ampadu Daaduem, 64, Mpraesohene and a legal practitioner, Mr Emmanuel Richard Ofori, a banker, Mr Michael Agyekum Addo, 55, a pharmacist and Mr Amaning Twum, 55, an agriculturist.
