The newly-created Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly, with headquarters in Kpone has been inaugurated with a call on the chiefs and people in the district to play active roles in the district assembly system.

Madam Hanny Sherry Ayittey, Minister of the Environment, Science and Technology who made the call, said the creation of the new districts was in fulfillment of a Manifesto promise the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made before the 2008 elections.

She said with this, she was hopeful that Ghanaians would keep faith with the NDC government, and ensure that there was continuity in governance.

Madam Ayittey said participatory governance and local level development had been the mantra of the NDC since its formation in 1992 saying “this has made all of us stakeholders in the decentralized local government system which has brought governance to the doorsteps of our people and accelerated development to our local communities.”

She expressed the hope that sanitation and waste management which had appeared intractable for most of the older districts, would not be a problem for the new Kpone-Katamanso District.

Mr. Robert Kempes Papa Nii Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly is the third after Ashaiman and Adenta Assemblies to be carved out of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA).

Mr. Bediako Brempong Asare, Director in charge of Administration at TMA, who is the newly-appointed Co-ordinating Director of the Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly, pledged members’ resolve to give of their best to ensure the smooth development of the district.

Nii Tetteh Otu II, Kpone Mantse, who chaired the function commended government for creating the district and reminded chiefs, opinion leaders, and the assembly members of the herculean task ahead of them in nurturing the assembly.

The new Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly has a membership of 26, with 18 of them being elected members, while the rest eight are government appointees.**
