An activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the North-Dayi Constituency of the Volta Region, Mr Andy Lartey, has attacked President J.A.Kufuor openly accusing him of neglecting the NPP activists and strong party faithfuls that can move the party forward.

Speaking to The Independent in a ready-to-fight mood in Kpando, Mr Andy Lartey accused President Kufuor of not using his executive powers to rein in and control his ministers and party gurus, some of who are so over-ambitious in ways that is creating tension and unnecessary confusion within the party.

Everyone wants to be president, he scoffed adding, it portrays the party as one full of selfish people all of who just intend to get the top rather than help build the country and the NPP. If not checked that could create serious problems for the party in future, he affirmed.

Mr Lartey then zeroed in on what could best be termed cronyism and nepotism. He told this paper that, he has information on authority that certain persons in high places in the Volta Region manipulate government scholarships to the advantage of relations of NPP party gurus.

That is creating a bad name for the party in the region, and President Kufuor must do something about it before it gets any worse, he pleaded.

Turning his attention back to the North-Dayi Constituency, the NPP activist pointed out that, unless the national executive of the party moves in to rescue the situation in the party in the constituency, things will get out of hand and that can lead to possible defections, he warned.

Attributing the problems of the NPP in the North-Dayi Constituency and the Volta Region as a whole, to acts of selfishness, neglect and divisiveness among party members, Mr Andy Lartey further on accused Mr Kenwood Nuworsu, who is the Volta Region Chairman of the NPP, of double standards.

He accused Nuworsu, who is also the regional boss of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), of pushing the party executive in the North-Dayi constituency to create total confusion within the party there.

When The Independent reached Mr Nuworsu on telephone, he wondered how he could be accused of meddling in the affairs of the party in the constituency when is the regional chairman of the party.

I have been chosen to look after the affairs of the party in the region and I manage 22 constituencies, he said “I used to be the secretary of the party in the region and I am now the chairman, which I have held for several year, so how can anyone say I am meddling in the affairs of the party?” On the issue of causing confusion in the party, Mr Nuworsu asserted that, I cannot use the executive members to cause confusion in the party since they have officially chosen to manage the party in the constituency. If anything at all, I can only use non-executive members to cause confusion in the party. So as you can see the accusations are baseless, he added.
