Dr. Kwabena Agyei’s long-standing tenure as National Chair of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to receive a major challenge.
Kofi Portophy, of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is set to make a major push for the NDC top post.
Ahead of the official launch of his campaign to become the next National Chairman of the NDC, Sir Kofi Kportuphy seems to have become the lead candidate whom the other interested persons have to beat.
In a contest that has the incumbent National Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei otherwise known as the ‘cat killer’, vying to be retained, while H.E. Ambassador Dan Abodakpi also making a very strong case as to why he should be the next chairman of the NDC, Sir Kofi Kportuphy appears to have won the confidence and trust of most constituency and branch officials of the NDC with whom this paper has interacted.
For most delegates, Dr. Kwabena Adjei has a great track record as the chairman who led the NDC, having led the party to wrestle power from the NPP and led the NDC to retain power in 2012.
“That is a formidable achievement and we would always be grateful for the benefit of his wisdom, patience, and endurance to lead us into those battles. But the time has come for us to ask Doc to move up to become a Council of Elders member where he can add his experiences to enrich the party,” one party official told this paper on condition of anonymity.
Indeed, the view captured above reflects the general tenor of the feedback that this paper received from sampling the views of party officials in the constituencies and branches.
Sir Kofi Portuphy, is described as a cadre’s cadre just like Ambassador Abodakpi and Dr.Kwabena Adjei. He has been in the forefront of the NDC politics for the most part of his adult life.
K. Portuphy is described as a good organizer and mobilizer, which the NDC‘s sources insist the party would need in 2016.
