Mr. Kwesi Biney, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahanta West in the Western region, has resigned from office. The resignation takes effect from the end of September 2006.

In a letter dated August 8, 2006 to His Excellency President J. A. Kufuor and copied to the Minister for Presidential Affairs of Staff, Local Government Minister and Western Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Biney said he arrived at the decision to protect his image, as well as the cohesion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The letter says; “I am with deep sense of regret to tender my resignation as the DCE of Ahanta West District from the end of September 2006. “I have arrived at this after careful consideration and analysis of events preceding my second nomination by his Excellency the President, events during and in course of my confirmation by the assembly.”

The letter recalled that the recent happenings within the district, sad to relate, have created the unfortunate impression in the minds of some top government officials, as well party members, to the effect that I am stumbling block to peace and unity in the party in the constituency.

“Sir, as a loyal and committed party member whose desire is to help deliver on the promises of the NPP government and ensure continued victory of our party at both the local level as well as the national level, I have arrived at this conclusion for the sake of my image and integrity as well as the unity and cohesion of the party,” it stated further.

He concluded by thanking the President for giving him the opportunity to serve the people in the district and the nation at large.

If the resignation is accepted by the President, Biney would go into history as the first DCE to have voluntarily taken such a decision. The last time he was in the media, he was alleged to have been in a bad blood with Hon. Jonfia, one of the MPs in the Western Region.

Biney served as DCE from June 2001 and was re-nominated in 2005 by President Kufuor. Mr. Biney was once the Editor of Daily Guide.
