Accra, Aug. 7, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Wednesday expressed its worry about the problems that have characterised the limited voter registration exercise. "The NCCE wishes to point out that these reported acts are unlawful and not acceptable since they bear elements of threat to the peace of this nation".
In a statement issued and signed by Mr. Larry Bimi, Chairman NCCE, NCCE said it wishes to reiterate that ensuring free, fair, credible and transparent election is the anchor upon which peace in elections is built.
It said "our individual and collective commitment to peace for our society must not, for any reason, be sacrificed on the altar of partisan interests and any groups desire to win political power, by any means." "The NCCE therefore wishes to call on all Ghanaians, as individual citizens, stakeholder institutions, political parties, Electoral Commission, the media and civil society to raise above all personal and partisan interest and work for real peace as we move towards the December election".
The statement said this limited voter registration exercise only aims at those who have attained the voting age of 18 since the last registration exercise and those who are above 18 but who are genuinely not registered as voters. "It is important to remind ourselves of the challenges of the 2008 election namely, citizen understands and respect for electoral rules and regulations, our abiding faith in fair-play, equity and justice, professionalism and unbiased non-partisan state institutions and our collective commitment to defend right and condemn wrong" It said NCCE therefore assures all Ghanaians that it will strive to sensitize, educate and create civic awareness that citizens require while calling on all to resist the temptation of pushing the nation into a frenzy of hopelessness and insecurity.
