MP appeals for help for Suaman constituency

Accra, June 28, GNA - Mr Stephen K. Ackah, NDC MP for Suaman, on Tuesday appealed to the Government to go to the rescue of the people of Suaman to enable them to tackle the numerous social problems confronting the community.

Mr Ackah said the deplorable nature of the roads since the rains started had greatly affected production and commercial activities in the area.

The MP said these in a statement on the floor of Parliament on the distressing conditions of the people of Suaman constituency. He said basic infrastructure such as health facilities, potable water and communication facilities were lacking in the area and these had contributed greatly to stalling most of the socio-economic activities.

"It is noteworthy that for the past four years roads in the constituency have never seen any major rehabilitation, not even the main trunk road from Enchi to Dadieso, the District Capital.

"It is on this road that the hundreds of tonnes of cocoa, timber and foodstuffs are transported to Takoradi Harbour and other places in the (Western) Region and people have to walk long distances to get to their destinations after disembarking from one vehicle to join the other."

Mr Ackah said the bad road had also contributed greatly to the reluctance of qualified social workers to accept postings to the area thereby hampering the development of the area.

"Mr Speaker, several appeals have been made to the highways and feeder roads authorities in the Western Region and headquarters but always the answer to these appeals is that the roads have been awarded on contract."

"Why to date the contractors have not reported to site and why in such a forest zone contracts are awarded for work to start during the rainy season is worrying and incomprehensible since in such a terrain meaningful work cannot be done.

"The people are desperate, disillusioned and disappointed for this treatment and I am once again appealing to the Ministry of Road Transport to take some drastic measures to salvage this perennial occurrence once and for all."
