Accra, Aug 31 GNA - Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, on Wednesday lauded President John Agyekum Kufuor and his administration for deepening the country's democracy by making the rule of law to reign supreme.

"If this government has not done anything at all the true freedom that Ghanaians are enjoying is enough testimony."

Mr Asiamah was speaking at a programme organized by the Fountain of Youth Association (YOFA) to build a monument in memory of President Kufuor for his diligence in sustaining good governance.

He said for the fact that the people could talk about issues openly such as the ongoing cocaine cases and the acknowledgement given by the international community and the qualification for the Millennium Challenge Account of the USA were ample testimony of how transparent and accountable this present Government was.

He called on the youth in the country to assist in the drafting of the National Youth Policy that should involve broad consultation with all the stakeholders.

Mr William Swatson, a Legal Adviser to the Association, said the initiative to build a legacy for the President was the brainchild of the Association.

He enumerated some of the achievements of the President, which included the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS); the upgrading of selected second cycles institutions in the each district; the establishment of the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs and the institution of the Capitation Grant.

The rest are the reduction of interest rate from 35 per cent to 15 per cent and the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law.

He said some of the programmes lined up for the celebration of the President's legacy included a special clean up exercise involving all the youth in the country, a special prayer service, an essay competition and a youth forum.
