MPs Fight Over Scoreline

Wed, 1 Nov 2006 Source: Heritage

For the fourth time in the life of the Fourth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, it has admitted a new Member into its fold in the person of Owusu Achiaw Duah of the New Patriotic Party, who won the recent by-election at Yesterday’s swearing in ceremony of the newest Member of Parliament, Dr Duah, was met with shouts of 3-1 from the Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC), while their counterparts from the majority New Patriotic Party (NPP) rebutted the claim with shouts of Yeah! Yeah!.

Apparently, the NDC MPs were alluding to the by-elections of the Asawase, Odododiodoo and Tamale Central, which were all won by their party as against the Offinso South, which went in favour of the NPP.

But the Majority Leader, Felix Kwesi Owusu-Adjepong, refuted the claim by the NDC that NPP had lost the previous three elections. According to him, to the best of his knowledge, “NPP contested only three elections” viz Asawase, Odododiodoo and Offinso.

Though the attendance was nothing to write home about, as there were a lot of empty seats on both sides, the shouts and counter shouts were so deafening that both Speaker Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi Hughes and Dr Duah could hardly be heard.

Remaining resolute and unperturbed by the somewhat intimidating shouts from the Members of the Minority, the newest MP took both the oaths of allegiance and of an MP administered to him by the Speaker.
