There were spontaneous shouts of “Mahama, Mahama” midway the first Awards Night of the women’s wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region on Saturday.
The shouts followed power outage at the Georgia Hotel auditorium in Kumasi – venue for the historic event.
The merry-making event was gathering momentum when suddenly the lights went off, plunging the entire place into total darkness.
Virtually all the people present, in one accord, yelled President Mahama’s name on top of their voices immediately the lights went off.
The manner in which the people mentioned the president’s name made it seem they had rehearsed for it.
At that moment, all the excitement at the event fizzled out temporarily with the people using the torches of their mobile telephones to illumine the place.
Luckily for the NPP, the power cut, known in local parlance as ‘Dumsor,’ lasted for about 20 minutes before it was restored.
When the power supply to the venue was interrupted, Paul Afoko, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, was yet to get to the venue.
When he arrived later and was to address the gathering, Mr. Afoko revisited the ‘Dumsor’ incident, sparking laughter among the gathering.
“I learnt President Mahama had visited us in this auditorium this evening,” he sarcastically asked the party faithful.
The crowd quickly realized where he was driving at and so they yelled, “Dumsor, Dumsor” amid laughter.
Mr. Afoko stated that from all indications, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government was overwhelmed by the energy crisis.
The power crisis has been collapsing businesses and worsening the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.
The public had continually lampooned the NDC administration for doing nothing to resolve the problem.
