A leading member of the Movement for Change, Nana Ohene Ntow, has described the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) John Mahama's 24-hour economy policy as an empty slogan that will achieve nothing.
The NDC leader has said the objective behind his proposed 24-hour economy initiative is to enable businesses to operate three shifts per day.
According to him, to achieve this goal, the government and private sector will collaborate.
"The 24-hour economy is designed to create new employment opportunities, particularly for young people, address unemployment, and enhance living standards in Ghana."
In a social media post, the NDC flag bearer said his government will enact new laws to support businesses operating a 24-hour system in seven days (24/7), including labour laws and tax incentives.
"To assist companies, there will be favourable tax policies, stimulus packages, and financial assistance available for specific industries, including agro-processing and manufacturing," Mr. Mahama posted.
The former President also said, "Buying local products and services will be the government's top priority, and measures will be implemented to ensure the smooth operation of the 24-hour economy."
But speaking on Peace FM while discussing the NDC manifesto which was launched on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Winneba in the Central Region, Nana Ohene Ntow urged Ghanaians not to trust the 24-hour economy policy to turn around the economy because it does not lie in the mouth of the government to dictate how businesses should be run.
"I have looked at some of Mahama's promises; he has made lots of promises, and I've jotted a few down. He says he will eradicate extreme poverty by creating jobs. He says he will reduce inflation and the national debt. Mr. Mahama has also said he'll invest $10 billion in infrastructure development, known as the big push. He has also talked about the 24-hour economy policy that will allow companies to work 24/7. But I don't get this from the NDC. Someone has his factory; he knows his market; he knows where he gets his raw materials from. Is it the government that will tell the business owner to run two or three shifts?
"The 24-hour economy is not a slogan and should not be. If the business or the factory has enough supply, is it the government that will tell the owner to run two or more shifts? The strength of the economy, the gains from agriculture and the support offered to industries will determine how many hours businesses operate. The 24-hour economy policy as put out by John Mahama is empty talk. It is a mere empty slogan, which will not yield any results," Nana Ohene Ntow said.
