Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, does not like to be referred to as a ‘Mugabe’ in politics.

He recalls how the Speaker of Parliament, Rev. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, had said that description is not a befitting one for good lawmakers.

Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu has been the Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency since 1997.

He is the only surviving Fourth Republican New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker.

He has been referred to as the Mugabe of Suame, a description given due to the late Zimbabwe leader, Robert Mugabe’s long stay in power.

But the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs says he prefers a John McCain or John Kennedy instead.

“They pursued the path of democracy and that is what we should learn.

“We should not tag people with adjectives and characterisations that are pregnant with innuendos. I am not too sure that is good enough.”

For him, if an MP stays for long and has no relevance he should be shown the exit by his party but not when he commands a wealth of experience.
