The Minority Caucus in Parliament has described the removal of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, as Chairman of the Finance Committee as an "overthrow."

The leader of the Majority Caucus, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, during the sitting on Friday, June 28, 2024, announced the reassignment of Kwaku Kwarteng, a former Deputy Minister of Finance, to the newly formed Economic Committee of Parliament.

“We, the Majority, have a new spokesperson on the economy; you (the Minority) have none. We have a new spokesperson, and very soon, we are going to unveil him: Kwaku Kwarteng.

“We have a Finance Committee and an Economy Committee. I am letting them know some of the proactive steps we are taking on this side of the house to throw a serious challenge.

"It is not just about governance. The Economy Committee is going to have a new leader, and he is going to be the most important person on the committee to challenge you, Isaac Adongo. That is why we are now going to make Kwaku Kwarteng the chair of the Economy Committee to face you,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Reacting to this, the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, accused the Majority leader of flouting procedures with his announcements, myjoyonline.com reports.

He made the point that the Speaker of Parliament, per the rules of the house, must be informed of any changes made to any committee of parliament.

He added that the reassignment of Kwaku Kwarteng is nothing but an overthrow, orchestrated by Afenyo-Markin.

“He's the Majority Leader, and he should know better not to usurp the power of the Speaker, the Chairman of the Committee of Selection, and to come here to simply announce without the knowledge of the Speaker.

“The existing Chairman of the Finance Committee, without the knowledge of the Speaker, without a meeting of the Committee of Selection - the Majority Leader will come to this House to simply announce that he has overthrown him and made changes," he is quoted as having said.
