Asamankese (E/R), Sept. 22, GNA - The Eastern Regional Co-ordinator of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), Mr Yaw Osafo-Kantanka, has observed that since the district assembly and unit committee concept was the bedrock of the country's democratic dispensation, there was the need to strengthen it through massive participation by the electorate. He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to massively turn out to vote in the forthcoming district level elections to elect capable and dedicated people to steer affairs at the District Assemblies and Unit Committees. Mr Safo-Kantanka was addressing DFP interim leaders from six constituencies in the Eastern Region at Asamankese. He also inaugurated the Lowest West Akyem executives on Wednesday.
The interim constituency executive members at the meeting were drawn from the Akwatia, Suhum, New Juaben North, New Juaben South, Ayensuano and Upper West Akyem constituencies.
Mr Osafo-Kantanka said though the district assembly and unit committee elections were non-partisan, there was the need for political parties to show interest, not by sponsoring candidates, but by whipping the enthusiasm of their members and the general population to vote. He said the DFP was destined to become a 93third force,=94 which would introduce a refresh image and perspective into the country's politics.
He asked members and supporters to be ready to plunge into hectic political mobilization and organisation to build a solid base for the Party, adding that the DFP had not only come to stay, but to transform the social, economic and political life of the country. The Regional Co-ordinator warned the interim executives to ensure that in spreading the "good news" of the DFP, they should refrain from insulting their political opponents. Instead, they should study the Party's constitution and manifesto and educate the people accordingly. The interim Lower Akyem constituency secretary of the Party, Mr Alex Amponsah, said even though the DFP was yet to be launched, it already registered 2,700 people as its members in the Asamankese town alone.
Mr Lawrence Ayebi, the interim constituency chairman, asked those who were joining the Party to do so for the love of it and not for financial and material gain.
The interim Eastern Regional Organizer of the party, Mr Godwin Dewornu assured members that the sacrifices they would be making in building the Party would not be in vain because they would be building a better future for themselves and posterity.
