General Secretary of the People’s National Convention, Bernard Monah, is very likely to be out of the list of able men and women of the party who will be vying for the general secretary position when the party invites nominations for National Executive positions any time this year.
Bernard Monah, in his early 40s, is targeting the national chairmanship position of the party as well as the flagbearership position for 2016.
He did not categorically say which one he is working on at the moment, but his utterances and gestures suggested that he is looking more at the chairmanship position, since that one is closer and easy to grab with very little efforts. He gave the hint after a People’s National Convention meeting held in Bolgatanga.
According to him, though he has not achieved most of the targets he set for himself as the general secretary, it will be good for the party if he moves to a higher level where he can support whoever becomes the general secretary, while he (Bernard Monah) also attends to his duties as the party’s national chairman.
Bernard Monah is of the view that the incumbent Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, has not been effective in playing his role as the lifeline of the party at all levels as expected; hence, the need to replace him with someone who will be more effective in playing that role.
He also lamented about the chairman’s failure to strengthen the communication that will rouse national, regional and constituency executives to the reality of the party and the need to mobilise members to increase the fortunes of the party at all levels.
“These reasons have caused me to think of battling for the chairmanship position. I believe that I am capable in awakening and keeping all level of executives on their toes across the country to improve the fortunes of the party.”
If he succeeds in his bid, he will be the youngest national chairman the PNC has had in recent times.
Becoming the flagbearer soon after a young man, Hassan Ayariga, led the party in 2012 may be difficult, considering some comments made by some leading PNC members in the Upper East Region and others in the media.
For many PNC members, the 2012 flagbearer did not take the position seriously. Many are of the view that his attitude was due to the fact that he had very little experience in political leadership, added to the fact that the position came to him on a silver platter.
