Presidential aspirant, of the NDC, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, says former President John Dramani Mahama is being deceived in his impression that he has the full backing of the leadership of the party for the flagbearership position.
According to Bagbin, the so-called massive support and loyalty being enjoyed by the former leader from Executives of the party are largely cosmetic and can’t be sustained at the polls.
“…There is some perception that executives are supporting one candidate. Well, it could be pretense…You know we are in Ghana and I know what is happening on the ground. So the fact that the person is following you and saying Yes, Yes I support you doesn’t mean the person will go and vote for you. If that has been the situation, the crowd that we had at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2016, if it’d translated into votes we wouldn’t have lost 1 million votes.” Mr. Bagbin who is also the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament told Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.
Mr John Dramani Mahama is highly-tipped to win the party’s upcoming primary slated 23rd February 2019.
The NDC came under intense public scrutiny and criticism after suspicions that the leadership of the party are working earnestly towards former president Mahama’s bid for a return.
For instance, the events at the party’s Congress and astronomical filing fees it imposed on its presidential hopefuls, as well as use of campaign songs of the former President have all been cited as acts that were targeted at favouring him ahead of his colleague aspirants.
Meanwhile, other aspirants who pulled out of the contest earlier have said they backed off the race because delegates had heavily endorsed the candidature of Mahama.
