NDC Member of Parliament for Shai Osu Doku, David Asumeng has called for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Tawiah Quaye over what he describes as his disappointment in the Police for their handling of Saturday’s riots in Akuse.
David Asumeng says he was amazed at the lackluster approach by the Police in dealing with the situation.
There were skirmishes between the people of Lower Manya and Osu Doku over a victory celebration concerning a Supreme Court ruling that said the disputed town of Akuse should be maintained in Lower Manya in the Eastern region and not in Shai Osu Doku in the Greater Accra region.
An attempt by the Police to forestall the celebrations degenerated into chaos prompting riots from both sides leaving a few people injured.
David Asumeng in an interview with XYZ News said the Akuse riots coupled with other recent disturbances in Hohoe in the Volta region, Nankpanduri in the Northern region and Akumfi Naakwa in the Central region are ample evidence that the IGP is not on top of his job and must resign before plunging the country into chaos as the December elections approach.
“On Saturday what happened in Akuse made lose total confidence in the IGP and that is why I say such conflicts will continue to occur.
“I believe that he is not on top of his job and he should be advising himself. We want peaceful elections and if as at now he cannot prevent chaos then it means we cannot trust the peace that we want in his hands”.**
