NDC Polling agents attacked at Bunso

Bunso (E/R), Dec. 7, GNA- Twenty-two members of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Educational Institutions Network (TEIN), of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were recruited as polling agents for Fanteakwa were allegedly attacked at the Cocoa College at dawn on Tuesday at Bunso in the Eastern Region.

One of the agents, Mr Leonard Tengah, a Teaching Assistant of the University, was reportedly kidnapped to an unknown destination when the Narrating the incident to newsmen, a member of the group, Mr Isaac Agbeti, also a Teaching Assistant, said they were recruited by Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the MP for Fanteakwa.


He said at about mid-night on Monday, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo, who hired some rooms at the College for the polling agents, came to orientate them about their duties.


According to him, soon after he had left at about 0001 hours the agents heard the arrival of some vehicles and moments later they heard banging on the doors amidst calls on those inside to open and come out. Mr Agbeti said the invaders broke open the doors and ordered them out of the rooms. Some of them managed to run away, others were arrested and severely assaulted.


He said the attackers ordered them to leave the college and go back to where they came from, and in the process, whisked away Mr Tengah. Mr Agbeti said at about 0530 hours, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo arrived at the scene with some military personnel after reporting the matter to Osino police.

No arrests have been made.


According to him, the attackers snatched away from the Begoro Zonal Secretary of the NDC, Mr Foster Ofosu, documents including copies of the voters' register and the accreditation documents of the agents. He described the attack as "a serious set back to the democratic dispensation the country had set on".


He called on the EC to investigate the incident.
