NDC Swoops On Defector

The National Democratic Congress, in a sharp reaction to the defection of its two-term constituency chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Tofik, a.k.a Tabasiru, has organised a swoop on the man?s Nima residence, disposed him of his Nissan Sunny saloon car, and threatened to teach him a lesson for rubbishing the party and abandoning it.

The four man strong party operatives, one of whom was member of the NDC-created Nkrumahist Brigade and named Ali Mosquito, who came to the residence of Tabasiru, boiling with anger and spoiling for a fight and violence, alleged that Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, a leading member of NDC who was a one-time defence minister, was the one who sent them to come and take possession of the car.

Tabasiru stated that when it dawned on the NDC executives members in the Constituency that there was no stopping him from making good his intention of decamping to the NPP, after working through his junior wife, a good number of them lamented ?let him go?.. he added, however, when after the defection press conference, there was a massive three-house procession through the principal streets of Nima, his former party colleagues were held spell-bound at the aftermath.

According to Tabasiru, his defection has emboldened those who were vacillating over whether to quit what they perceive as a dying and lying party, or not, ?to make a final leap onto the NPP bandwagon.? This, he added, was what manifested in the grand procession which kept attracting more and more persons, as it would its way throughout Nima until its number stood at close to six hundred or so.

Nima has been a flashpoint in the politics of Accra. It was keenly contested by Dr. Farouk Brimah, whom Tabasiru campaigned for, and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, now the ECOWAS executive secretary. The latter was eventually asked by the NDC headquarters to leave the constituency for Bimbilla, where he won the seat.
