Johnson Asiedu Nketia-NDC General SecretarySOME IRATE youth, believed to be members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Yendi municipality, in the early hours of Monday clashed with armed policemen in the town.
The security, in the process, dispersed the youth who planned to demonstrate against the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hudu Mohammed Welvis, over unresolved grievances.
Sources told DAILY GUIDE that the youth failed to secure a permit before embarking on the demonstration, despite the volatile nature of the municipality.
Their actions were against the public order act and since the police were not given prior notice, they immediately mobilized and dispersed the demonstrating youth who, as at press time, had been kept at bay from the NPP constituency office and the assembly.
This is however not the first time the youth of the area are up in arms against the MCE. In July this year, the group was alleged to have subjected him to series of brutalities.
Doors and louver blades of the assembly offices were reportedly broken following stone throwing from the charged youth. But for the timely intervention of security details in the municipality, the situation could have turned bloody.
The MCE incurred the wrath of the youth following their dislike of an appointment he made for the position of the Coordinator for the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).
According to the youth, the MCE needed to hold some consultation with their leadership before arriving at certain decisions. They threatened to resist any attempt to impose unpopular persons on them.
The youth, reports say, have as a result registered their dislike for the administration of the MCE and are calling on the President to reconsider his appointment in the area for the sake of peace. They earlier threatened to go on rampage if the said appointment was not immediately revoked, and were said to have petitioned the Kampakuya Naa, who is the regent of Dagbon, over the matter.
But months after their concerns were raised; no definite responses had been given. They therefore decided to demonstrate to press home their concerns. Police however say their demonstration is illegal since they had not duly informed the security agencies before embarking on the street protest; reasons for which they were dispersed.
All attempts to talk to the MCE on the matter proved futile as he was out of touch.
As at press time he was yet to respond to two text messages sent to his cell phone.
