The National Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Zongo Caucus is to embark on a nationwide peace campaign ahead of the declaration of the 2012 election petition verdict.
The objective of the campaign is to educate and sensitize chiefs, Imams, opinion leaders, the Muslims ummah, youth groups and people living in Zongo communities on the need for peace in the country after the declaration of the Supreme Court’s verdict.
Alhaji Yussif Captain, National Coordinator of the Caucus, said this at meeting with the Greater Accra Council of Bissa Chiefs on Saturday in Accra.
He said political tolerance is the only means by which Ghana could consolidate the gains made out of multi-party democracy and this would enable the nation maintain her status as the beacon of hope for Africa.
Alhaji Captain said ahead of the verdict, there have been several talks on the need to avoid tendencies that will disturb the peace in the country as Ghana.
He said it was not enough for political parties to make pledges and declarations about peace after the verdict and that there was the need to clamp down on errant party supporters.
Alhaji Captain said the fact that the New Patriotic Party chose the path of rule of law in seeking justice without going on the streets as like Kenya and Cote d’ Ivoire, whiles the citizenry have access to what is going at the Supreme Court, was a commendable act.
He appealed to the chiefs, Imams, youth groups and opinion leaders in the Zongo communities and the country at large to continue to maintain the peace the country is enjoying for development.
Chief Ali Mahama Dabire, Greater Accra Chief of Bissa, said there is the need for Muslim and Zongo leaders and Chiefs to be peace ambassadors in their communities to promote development.
