Mr. Modestus Ahiable, Ghana’s Ambassador to Benin has urged members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to be swayed by the deliberate smear campaigns of opponents against government.
He said though the country was going through economic challenges, Ghana remained an enviable nation not only in Africa, but across the world.
Mr. Ahiable was addressing a Delegates’ Conference at Ave-Afiadenyigba to elect new constituency executives for the Akatsi-North Constituency at the weekend.
He asked the party members to be bold yet civil in their defense of government policies.
The Ambassador attributed the country’s problems to both external and internal factors, such as the falling prices of the country’s export commodities, and the ballooning domestic expenditure, especially the wage bill.
Mr. Ahiable said government was not idle and dismissed suggestions that government was bereft of ideas as propaganda.
He swore the 25 executives, including eight co-opted members into office, and asked them to work closely with the people.
He also advised the people to avoid peddling unfounded allegations against the executives.
Mr. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, said the difficulties would be over ahead of the 2016 elections, but warned party executives and members against complacency.
Mr. Edwin Aklorbortu, Deputy Volta Regional NDC Chairman, lauded the enthusiastic support for the Party in the area, and charged the executives to serve the people.
Mr. James Gunu, Akatsi North District Chief Executive, called for the strengthening of the party’s branches, describing them as the pillars for election victories, adding, and “A weak branch amounts to a weak party.”
All the 14 executive positions went unopposed, bringing the meeting, supervised by the officials of the Electoral Commission, to a peaceful and early close.
Mr. Kodjo Katamani, a farmer who filed to contest the secretary position with the incumbent Mr. David Dugbatey, withdrew at the last hour, citing the need for unity in the party ahead of the 2016 elections as his reason.
Mr. Prince Aglago, the incumbent Constituency Chairman, pledged on behalf of his colleagues to work hard.
