Former Minister of Education and running mate of John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 elections, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reiterated that the NDC government did not cancel the trainee allowances for teachers, as has been widely said.
According to her, the allowances were replaced with student loans for all trainees, emphasizing that no allowances were taken away from anyone.
She said the NDC gave the new trainee teachers a one-year notice that the NDC government was going to give them loans and added means.
She said “So, what justification do you have? It’s okay we have heard you. Then we’ll put you on student loan. Anyone who says we cancelled their allowance should come and say it. We never took anybody’s allowance from them. We gave a one-year notice that coming next year, you will take the loan. We sent people to go and educate them in the secondary schools.
“Many applied for the loans and got them. And because a custom had already been set, we had to phase it out. So those who already had unpaid allowances, they all received it before bringing in the new ones. So, what are they talking about?” she quizzed.
