Bolgatanga, Jan. 24, GNA - The fortunes of the National Democratic (NDC) party in the 2012 general elections are bright, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Mr Martin Amidu, has observed.

He said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Saturday after touring the Upper East Region to express appreciation on behalf of the Government to the chiefs and people of the area for their full support to the party during the run-off of the 2008 election.

"The fortunes of the NDC on the ground in the Upper East Region from my thank you rounds are bright should the party sustain consistent and regular contacts with the chiefs and people," he said.

Mr Amidu noted that almost all the chiefs and people they visited were full of praise for the Government for the programmes it had started in the Region

"They were particularly happy that the task force, which I led, in the second Presidential run-off, kept faith with them by returning to thank and recognize their contributions towards the party's victory in 2008."

Mr Amidu, however, indicated that the problem had been the inability of the constituency executives of the party to pursue a consistent interaction with the chiefs and people to cement the trust in the Government and party which was waiting to be fully harnessed.

"My presence in each of the constituencies and chiefdoms with the Members of Parliament, where this was possible, gave the constituency executives the opportunity to reestablish rapport with the chiefs and the people in each constituency", he said..

Mr Amidu stressed that with proper support and coordination of resources from the regional party executives to the constituencies, the NDC should be able to reclaim all the 13 seats in the Region.

He said his personal observation during the visit was that there appeared to be a gap between the regional and constituency executives that needed to be bridged. This is needed to enable the constituency executives to effectively mobilize the grassroots and floating voters for the party.

Mr Amidu entreated the regional and constituency executives to ensure that they maintained a cordial relation with the chiefs and people in the Region to pave way for the party to recapture power in 2012.

He said Ghanaians in general by the year 2012 election would have every reason to be satisfied with the performance of this Government and to return it to power for another four year term.

"The past two years have not been easy because of the inherited problems from our predecessors but there is now very bright light at the end of the tunnel," Mr Amidu said.

He told party supporters to keep faith with the Government because it was going to deliver on its promises as far as practicable and to their satisfaction.

"From this year of action to 2012 you will not regret supporting this Government to come to power," he said.
