NDC supporters urged to unite behind party

Accra, Jan. 8, GNA - Members and sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been urged to unite solidly behind the party to ensure the success of the administration of President John Evans Atta Mills.

Speaking to newsmen after the swearing-in of Professor Atta Mills as the third President of the fourth Republic of Ghana in Accra on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Odododiodioo Constituency of the NDC, Mr. Daniel Nii Okai noted that, this was very important now that the party had assumed power after being in opposition for the past eight years. He congratulated the President for his victory in the December 2008 election and expressed the hope that he would be successful in implementing his programmes and plans to alleviate the suffering that Ghanaians went through under the previous government. Mr. Okai noted that Prof. Atta Mills could not have chalked his electoral success without the hard work of cadres and supporters of the NDC and commended them for their commitment and hard work during the electioneering, which had culminated in the resounding victory for the NDC.

He urged them to continue their support to ensure that President Atta Mills and the NDC delivered on their electoral promises of "Prosperity for all and investing in people and jobs" for the electorate.

The NDC Constituency Chairman stated that the sacrifices of the cadres, members and supporters of the party had not gone unnoticed and said the party would reward them accordingly at the appropriate time. He said with the NDC now in the helm of affairs they should rededicate themselves to the cause of the party, which was a social democratic movement to pursue human centred policies for the benefit of the "common man".

Mr. Okai advised them to be tolerant of their opponents in their jubilation and to avoid provocation, which could lead to violence. The Constituency Chairman stated that differences of opinion should not lead to conflict among Ghanaians since "We are one people with one destiny", adding, "We should be each other's keeper and not allow politics to divide us".

He commended the electorate for conducting themselves in a manner that had attracted the praise of the international community in the period before, during and after the elections, which had maintained the peace and stability of the nation unlike some other nations that plunged into conflict after elections.

Mr. Okai called on the leadership of the NDC not to overlook the sacrifices of the cadres when the party was in the opposition and to let them feel at home, now that the party was in power to ensure the survival of the NDC in the years ahead.

He praised the executives and members of the party in the constituency for their efforts during the electioneering, which resulted in the party retaining the seat for an unprecedented second time in the history of the constituency and gaining more than 10,000 votes for President Atta Mills in both the general election and the Presidential run-off. 08 Jan. 09
