NDC will take part in voters' registration exercise – Sammy Gyamfi reveals

The Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has disclosed that the party will partake in the new voters' registration exercise to be conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The NDC together with smaller opposition parties have waged a strong campaign including demonstrations across the country to resist the EC’s decision to compile new voters' register for the upcoming December 7, 2020, general elections.

The NDC-led Inter-party resistance against a new voters’ group register has slammed the Jean Mensah led Electoral Commission for telling “well-packaged lies to Ghanaians” in an attempt to compile a new register ahead of the 2020 elections.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia stated that the lies by the EC were “deliberately calculated to court public support for the compilation of a new voters register.”

According to him, these falsehoods, coupled with the raging controversy over corrupt tender processes for the supply of new BDV equipment and the announcement of a winner with a questionable record, clearly show that something fishy is going on at the EC.

“It is either Jean Mensah and her sponsors have a financial interest in the procurement of entirely new equipment or that the compilation of a new register is part of a rigging agenda for the benefit of NPP or both.”

Commenting on the issue on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on Wednesday monitored by Kasapafmonline.com, Sammy Gyamfi disclosed that the NDC is set to head to court if the EC maintains it’s decision to compile a new voters register.

He nonetheless, added that the NDC will ensure its members throng the various registration centres to register if all legitimate moves fail to stop the EC from proceeding with the registration exercise.

“As for the court, we will go to stop the EC from going ahead with the registration exercise. If our efforts fail, then the NDC will take part in the registration. There’s no gainsaying that,” Sammy Gyamfi said.

The Electoral Commission (EC) will begin compiling a new voters’ register on Sunday, April 18, 2020.

The Commission intends to complete the exercise by May 30, 2020.

The Commission also expects to exhibit the new register from August 15 to August 28, 2020.
