National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region have issued a two-week ultimatum to President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area or incur their wrath.

They threatened to make the area ungovernable if the President fails to heed their call within the stipulated period

The group operating under the name ‘Concerned Graduates of Kumbungu,’ noted that the continued absence of the DCE in the Kumbungu District was hampering development in the area, stating that the youth would not permit self-centered interests to supersede the larger interest of Kumbungu.

According to them, the residents were better off under the Tolon/Kumbungu District.

The Kumbungu District was inaugurated mid 2012 before the death of President Mills.

The situation could be attributed to the struggle over who becomes a DCE among the party’s functionaries.

The Sang, Tatale/Saguli, Sene North, Sagnarigu Districts, among others, got DCEs in 2012 and were fully functioning while the people of Kumbungu are wallowing poverty due to the lack of DCE who would serve as catalyst for the development of Kumbungu, the aggrieved youth indicated.

According to the youth, the continuous delay in the appointment of a substantive DCE by the President had heightened tension among the various interest groups.

Addressing a press conference at Kumbungu, the youth threatened to take undesirable actions that may affect the central government and its agencies if the President fails to heed their call.

Saaka Alhassan, spokesperson for the group, said the rumours in the area could affect the fortunes of the NDC in the district, claiming the delay altered the voting pattern in the last by-election that saw the CPP snatch the seat from the ruling NDC, which held it since 1992.

The spokesperson said some people had attributed the delay in the appointment of a DCE to the actions of the Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni and Alhaji Yakubu Kakpagu factions in the district.
