CHARGES ON NDC LEADERSHIP TO COME CLEAN, DESCRIBES CONFAB AS UNMERITORIOUS, BASELESS

After keeping mute for more than one week over the press conference organized by the leadership of the opposition NDC on 20th January 2007, in which numerous allegations were raised against the ruling NPP the core figures of the elephant family on 3rd February, 2007 descended on their accusers calling them to substantiate their claims with real facts and figures. .

In a nine-page press statement by the party executives in Techiman North and South constituencies, signed by the assistant secretary, Techiman south, Adams Mohammed, they described the NDC press conference as unmeritorious and urged the electorates in the commercial capital to disregard it. According to it, the statement issued by the NDC core members in Techiman is worthless and worth nullify by any patriotic Ghanaian who really understands multi party democracy.

It noted that in an era where people are abreast with information it would do the biggest opposition party in the country (NDC) a great good if it shun all her propaganda ploys with the sole aim of carrying distorted information to the masses. In it quest to clear herself from the numerous allegations leveled against it, it said the ruling NPP has nothing against opposition parties in Ghana, more especially those who believe in the ideology of Rawlings Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) as well as NDC.

The document expressed regret over a serious assertion that since assumption of office about six years ago, NPP took to election rigging in Techiman municipality and the nation at large, giving it dubious license to manipulate the Electoral Commission (EC). It however laid much emphasis on the just ended District / unit committee and the 2004 general elections. It warned that if truly there were any truth in the allegations made by the NDC set in Techiman municipality then it would not have given the chance to take the two enviable parliamentary seats in Techiman north and south constituencies during the 2004 elections.

It therefore called for intensive surveillance on those NDC men who made such unpardonable and immature comments to come out and substantiate them because it has the potential of undermining the credibility of results within the municipality and the nation as a whole in future. The document was quoted as saying the NDC had already threw in the towel because it has realized that it cannot make any serious impact in the forth coming general elections slated for December 2008 and is looking for ways to dispute the elections. The press statement took the opportunity to commend the EC for its neutral services to all the political parties in the country, describing it as credible institution which can never be manipulated as it is been alleged by the NDC.

Reacting to further assertion that the NPP executives in Techiman have connive with the police in trampling over the rights of supporters and sympathizers of NDC, it said it a total fallacy and added though the various security agencies in Ghana are under the central government, it cannot manipulate them when it comes to service deliver to the citizenry.

It explained that, since it had already been spelt out in the 1992 constitution that it is the responsibility of the government to protect the masses , particularly the down trodden , NPP as a true democratic will never employ any despotic strategy to oppress the voiceless in the country because opposition parties role in democracy cannot be looked down upon.

Devoid of insults and other provocative words, the statement made reference to the aftermath of the 2006 district /unit committee polls where a key figure in NDC, Mumuni Saaka was whisked away by the police at the EC’s office, Techiman after threatening the municipal electoral office , Mr. Kwabena Asante and his staff backed by heavily built men. This it said should not be perceived as harassment masterminded by an opposition party because under normal circumstance, the law court is the best abode for one to make his/her sentiment known.

With concentration drawn in the faces of the party executives and media personnel present at the Brongkyempem hall, the release read by Adams Muhammad, affectionately called ‘B’ Slow hastily denied another growing assertion in the commercial capital by the supporters of NDC that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Prince Yaw Dinyina is very harsh on NDC members.
