A National Women Organiser aspirant of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mawusi Awiti says she can deliver the Volta region - the ruling party’s stronghold - for the NPP in 2016.
A native of the region herself, Awiti told XYZ Breakfast Show on Thursday that the party needs to have more Voltarians at the national leadership level to help fritter off the perception that it is an Akan-dominated party.
“…NPP has not done well in terms of getting votes in the Volta region. I’m going to do a lot of work in the Volta region. I’m going to bring NPP closer to the Voltarians for people not to have that perception that NPP is an Akan party”, Awiti said.
She said even though there are Voltarians in the NPP, “…if I’m the national women organiser, it means I have the mandate to operate much more than just being a party member”.
“I’m a Tongu…I come from the tribe that the people live along the River Volta, they are scattered all over. I’ll get to my people, speak with them, explain the policies to them, let them understand that this is what the party stands for”.
Awiti will be contesting the current Women Organiser, Otiko Djaba and Deputy, Tina Mensah in the March 1, 2014 national executive election.
