Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, has expressed concerns regarding the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the upcoming general elections on December 7.

Dr. Otchere criticized Dr. Prempeh's temperament, stating that it is unsuitable for the position, especially given the current economic challenges faced by the party.

"The NPP’s running mate should be someone with a sober reflection and well-mannered to appeal to voters, particularly as the party aims to break the eight-year political jinx," he remarked.

He pointed to Dr. Prempeh's handling of the dumsor timetable issue as evidence of his unsuitability, describing him as a "hothead."

Additionally, Dr. Otchere labelled Dr. Prempeh as a diversionist, citing his conflicts with Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako as further proof of his unsuitability for the role.

Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, Dr. Otchere reacted to the news of Vice President Bawumia presenting Dr. Prempeh as his running mate to President Akufo-Addo. He highlighted the potential difficulties Dr. Prempeh may face in relating to the followers of Mr. Boasiako within the party.

Dr. Otchere also raised concerns about the potential challenges of appealing to the Christian community, given the NPP flagbearer’s focus on a Christian-Muslim divide.

He warned that the party has significant challenges ahead with Dr. Prempeh as the running mate.
