As It Abandons Bawku Central MP
The opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) disrespect for non-Akans seems to have been confirmed by its lack of support for the jailed Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Adamu Daramani Sakande.
Even before his incarceration, the NPP gurus never had time to accompany him to the court, like they did when the loud-mouthed Assin North Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was charged.
Irrespective of the Assin-North MP’s warmongering and genocidal comments, many leading members of the NPP always accompanied him to the court, aside members massing up at the Police CID Headquarters in Accra, demonstrating their endorsement of his misconduct.
It would be recalled that an aggrieved group from the Bawku Central Constituency months ago, publicly came out to register its displeasure for the lack of respect for non-Akans in the NPP, and how sadly the party had abandoned their Member of Parliament (MP).
Background:
Mr. Adamu Daramani Sakande was sentenced to two years imprisonment by an Accra Fast-Track High Court.
He was found guilty of false declaration of office, perjury and deceiving a public officer.
A cattle farmer sued the MP, accusing him of violating the electoral laws of Ghana, by contesting the Bawku Central Constituency Parliamentary seat, whilst still a British citizen.
The state took interest in the case and filed nine counts relating to his nationality, perjury, forgery of passport, election fraud and deceiving public officers to be elected as an MP against Mr. Daramani.
He was, however, exonerated on six of those charges on July 8, 2010, leaving with three charges of false declaration of office, perjury and deceiving of a public officer.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for each of the charges, which were to run concurrently.
