National Organiser of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yamin, has criticised the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for accusing President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government of suppressing freedom of speech.

According to Yamin, the NPP leadership should instead appreciate President Mahama for governing Ghana with what he described as a "Father for All" approach.

His comments follow a petition submitted by the opposition NPP to the Diplomatic Corps, urging the international community to reaffirm the importance of freedom of expression, judicial independence, due process, and political tolerance within Ghana's constitutional democracy.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Ambassador TV host Osei Kwadwo, monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Yamin argued that if President Mahama were to adopt the style of governance that, in his view, characterised the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP members would find it difficult to cope.

“If someone is inciting hatred in our society, we do not expect the NPP to say that the government and the security services should sit idle and allow that person to continue,” Yamin said.

“Sometimes I think President John Dramani Mahama is too good to be the President of Ghana because of his ‘Father for All’ mentality. He should have been President of the United States, while Donald Trump should have been President of Ghana,” he added.

Yamin further stated that some NDC members and executives believe President Mahama should adopt the methods used by the previous NPP administration because of the treatment they say NDC supporters endured under that government.

“The reason some NDC members and executives feel President Mahama should implement the methods used by the NPP and Nana Addo is because of the treatment some of our members went through under their administration,” he said.

“President John Mahama is too gentle. The NPP should appreciate his God-fearing nature and his ‘Father for All’ attitude because they are being treated with kid gloves compared to how former President Akufo-Addo treated some Ghanaians, especially NDC supporters,” Yamin added.
