Thugs who attacked the Chairman and General Secretary of Ghana’s main opposition party on Tuesday were hirelings of the governing party.

That is the allegation made by the Chairman, Mr Paul Afoko, who almost got pummeled and hacked by an irate mob that stormed the New Patriotic Party’s Headquarters in the national Capital, as he and Secretary Kwabena Agyapong addressed journalists about recent disagreements in the NPP’s leadership.

Describing the mob as “intruders”, Afoko said he was told the irate youth were members of the ruling National Democratic Congress, who had been hired to execute a hatchet job against the NPP.

He insisted none of the attackers was a member of the NPP.

The angry youth, who wielded machetes, guns and other crude weapons, bayed for the blood of Afoko and Agyapong at the party’s headquarters, mid-way through a press conference organised by the two NPP leaders, to clarify issues concerning a rumpus over a few changes the General Secretary had effected in the party’s communication directorate.

Dozens of Police Officers had to rush to the party’s Asylum Down office to quell the pandemonium.
