The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it was ready for the presidential and parliamentary elections on November 7, had the constitutional amendment bill that sort to change the poll date was accepted by parliament.

The proposed new date for the polls was shot down by parliament on Thursday July 21. A total of 125 of the 275 Members of the Parliament voted for the November 7 date while 95 MPs voted against it. The YES votes, however, did not suffice the two-thirds majority needed to get the bill passed.

The majority in parliament and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have accused the minority and the NPP of voting for partisanship instead of national interest.

Mr. Martin Adjei Mensah-Korsah, Director of Elections for the NPP Mensah-Korsah said after the speaker’s announcement that: “The NPP was very much ready for November 7. All the arguments for it were sound and still remain sound. Unfortunately, this Commission, so disappointingly was going to throw us into a problem as they have always done.”
