The incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tema West, Irene Naa Torshie and the Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Carlos Ahenkora, have finally smoked the peace pipe with both pledging to work together in the interest of the party.

Naa Toshie on Friday during the NPP Flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo’s tour of the area, embraced Carlos Ahenkorah and declared support for him for the first time, a year after their heated election.

Mr Ahenkora faced opposition from Irene Naa Torshie Addo during the party’s primary on July 25, 2015 but eventually polled 503 votes, while Naa Torshie Addo had 273.

The other contender Adwoa Amoakoa, had 2 votes.naa-1The MP never accepted defeat which developed into a frosty relationship between herself and Carlos Ahenekorah, a situation which many political watchers concluded would have adversely affected the electoral fortunes of the NPP in Tema West even though the area is an NPP stronghold.naa-2

Carlos Ahenkorah’s woes

Five months after Mr. Ahenkorah’s election, as the Parliamentary Candidate he was sued by some members of the party who demanded among others a rerun of the primary in Tema West.

According to the two plaintiffs, Nana Yaw Ntim and Christian Joseph, Mr. Ahenkorah was not eligible to contest the primary in Tema West because the NPP had announced prior to the primary, that non-Ga indigenes were not to contest in Ga areas, hence Mr. Ahenkorah who is not a Ga, had breached the party’s regulations.

They thus wanted his election set aside and a rerun of the primary. The lawsuit, which had the NPP as a respondent, pended for a considerable time.

The disagreements delayed his clearance by the party’s Vetting Committee but he was subsequently cleared.
