The Greater Accra Region Branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the party’s 2008 and 2012 flagbearer, to return from his “retirement” to lead the party again for the 2016 elections.

The Branch claims Nana Addo has got all “what it takes to return the party to power”.

This came to the fore on Friday, September 6, 2013 when TV3’s Kweku Temeng interviewed Ishmael Ashitey, the regional chairman of the party.

He led a large group of members to the residence of Nana Addo in Nima, Accra.

“We are counting on [Nana Addo] to come again to lead the party,” he said.

Asked whether he was not subverting the party’s constitution with such a call, Mr Ashitey maintained that the Region’s call is to let Nana Addo factor into his plans leading the party by going through the filing process.

“We are here not because we are defying our democratic credentials but to talk to [Nana Addo] to go through the filing process,” Mr Ashitey said on behalf of his members.

“This is the man who has led us for a period,” he noted.

After the country’s Supreme Court dismissed his petition against the 2012 Elections, Nana Addo called time on his political career, saying he will “get some rest, reflect and then announce whatever decision I come to in the not too distant future.”

“We want to tell him that he should input into his future, plans of leading the party,” the former Member of Parliament for Tema East Constituency said.
