The Konor of the Manya Krobo Traditional area, Nene Sackite II, has admonished assembly members to respect the Chief Executives of their respective assemblies as a sign of respect to the President who appointed them.
He said Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are representatives of the President in the districts and so any assault on them would be a sign of disrespect to the President.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 45-member Lower-Manya Krobo District Assembly, the Konor entreated the newly sworn-in Assembly members to live above reproach and cooperate with the District Chief Executive, so that in unity they could work hard to improve their communities.
The Konor observed that, every assembly member mentioned his or her name prefix with the title ‘honourable’ and for that matter, they must exhibit maturity and excellence in the discharge of their duties to bring about development and improvement in the lives of the communities they represent.
Nene Sackite emphasized that, ‘honourable’ is not a name but a title and therefore “you should not use it for the sake of it, but must work hard in dignity to justify it for the benefit of the people who elected you.”
He urged the Assembly members to initiate community development programmes geared towards the elimination of extreme poverty and suffering of people living in the rural communities and not always look up to the government.
The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, who read the inaugural address on behalf of President Mahama, commended the Assembly for the peaceful manner in which the elections were conducted in the District and express the hope that such cordiality would continue for the fast development of the area.
Mr Joseph Tetteh-Angmor, the Upper-Manya Krobo District Chief Executive (DCE), reminded the Assembly members that, they were development agents and advised them not to pursue any other agenda for their selfish interest or that of a political persuasion.
He said the Assembly existed to roll out developmental projects and programmes to alleviate the plight of the ordinary people and as elected representatives of the people; they have a duty towards the people to ensure that the District moved on socially and economically.
The District Magistrate, Mrs Ellen Bossman, who sworn the members of the house on the oaths of office and secrecy, cautioned the Assembly members not to meddle in criminal cases such as rape and defilement, but rather support the justice system to allow the law to take its cause.
