The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe, has debunked the claim by some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the 46 newly created districts were initiated by the NPP Government before it left office in 2009.
“It is never true that the NPP Government under former President Kufuor created the districts before it left office,” the Regional Minister emphatically stated when Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development inspected facilities for the new Ekumfi District at Essarkyir near Mankessim.
Mrs Benyiwa-Doe urged the NPP to give credit where it is due and stop claiming any good thing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Government had done.
She said government was aware that districts were the axis on which development revolved hence the Professor John Evans Atta Mills-led Government created more districts to facilitate speedy development of the country.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo appealed to chiefs and people of the new districts to take very good care of the workers who would be posted to their districts to accelerate development of the districts.
The Minister urged them to rekindle their communal spirit to support the assemblies to develop the districts and cautioned the workers against using partisan politics to retard progress of the districts.
He said delay in approving government nominees for the post of District Chief Executives (DCEs) often affected progress of the assemblies and cautioned against demonstrations and agitations for removal of DCEs from office.
Nana Impraim VII, President of Ekumfi Traditional Council, assured the government that chiefs would do everything within their power to support members and workers of the assembly to speed up development of the district.**
