Ninety-eight file to contest elections in Brong Ahafo

Sunyani (B/A), Oct 27, GNA - Ninety-eight people, including six women, filed their nomination in Brong-Ahafo Region to contest the 2004 Parliamentary Elections.

Mr Amadu Sulley, Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), told the GNA in an interview that six political parties and 12 independent candidates would contest the elections in the Region. The women are Christina Atakora Mensah, 53, (NDC - Asunafo North); Florence Nyamekye, 48, (DPP - Tano North); Lovea Amponsah, 47, (DPP -Dormaa-East); Anna Nyamekye, 50, (NPP - Jaman South); Joana Mayfair, 51, (CPP - Tain) and Gemima Yahaya, 26, (EGLE - Tain).

Of the political parties the New Patriotic Party (NPP) topped the filing list with 24 candidates, followed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), 23 candidates and Convention People's Party (CPP), 16 candidates.

The list continued as follows: the Democratic People's Party (DPP) filed 10 candidates, six candidates for People's National Convention (PNC) while three candidates filed for the Every Ghanaian Living in Everywhere (EGLE) There was no nomination for National Reform Party (NRP) and Great Consolidated People's Party (GCPP).

Twelve people including a Reverend Minister filed as Independent candidates.

The Sunyani East recorded the highest number of seven candidates; Sunyani West, Tano North, Jaman South and Kintampo North recorded five candidates each, while Asunafo North, Asunafo South, Asutifi South, Dormaa-East, Jaman North, Wenchi, Tain, Techiman South, Kintampo South and Pru Constituencies had four candidates. The others are Asutifi North, Tano South, Techiman North, Nkoranza North, Atebubu-Amantin, Sene and Nkoranza South has three candidates each while in Berekum the race would be between NPP and NDC.
