Hohoe (V/R), July 4, GNA - Nana Ohene Ntow, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Monday exhorted constituency and polling station executives of the party to be incisive at organizing their structures for a resounding victory in the next general election. He noted that the political fortunes of the party and the country at large rested in the hands of constituency and polling station executives and therefore charged them to be resolute in their activities towards retaining power in the 2008 elections.
Nana Ntow was addressing the first extra-ordinary general meeting of the Hohoe North Constituency at Hohoe, which coincided with the inauguration of the Constituency Finance and Disciplinary Committees and the launch of a Constituency Coupon.
Nana Ntow, who was overwhelmed by the level of activity and organization, said it would be unpardonable if they failed to deliver the 106 polling stations in the constituency, unlike the solitary Likpe Mate polling station it won in the last general elections. He said many Ghanaians continued to root for the NPP to retain power due to the development in freedom slogan, contrary to the uncertainty they held against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the mayhem and terror they suffered in one way or the other. The General Secretary said it would be a complete political sacrilege for the NDC to continue to annex the constituency seat because historical antecedents pointed to the fact that the area had a Busia-Danquah following.
On development, Nana Ntow said t he country had witnessed unparallel development in prudent management of the economy, education, health, agriculture, mining in just five and a half years under the tutelage of President John Agyekum Kufuor. He said four million Ghanaians now used mobile phones dissimilar to be 300,000 users in 2000.
Mr John Peter Amewu, Hohoe District Chief Executive cataloguing the achievements of the District said his personal relationship with President Kufuor coupled with dynamism and handwork qualified the Assembly for the Millennium Challenge Account. Additionally, he said 46 basic schools had been built since 2004, which was unprecedented, with the District benefiting from a 1.2 billion cedis European Union Micro Projects Programme and a 920 million cedis Community Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP). Mr Amewu said the current street lighting project underway in the District was his handiwork and a whooping 800 million cedis had been committed towards the project in its second phase. Mr Solomon Kwame Donkor, Jasikan District Chief Executive said the only legacy the NDC reign had bequeathed the area was a single-phase electrification project, which had long been corrected. He urged the people to return to their political roots in order to deliver the seat, come 2008.
Nana Agyeman Prempeh, Ahafo Ano District Chief Executive re-echoed that Dr Abrefa Busia and Dr J B Danquah who were the founding fathers of the NPP were Brong and Akyem respectively and dispelled the notion that the party was Ashanti-based.
He said unless someone wanted to be mischievous, they would not twist the ethnic dichotomy to perpetuate misinformation and poison the political atmosphere. 4 July 06
