Leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has criticised Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the running mate of the party's flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for drawing parallels between President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's development efforts and those of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
In an interview on 3FM on July 11, 2024, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed his disapproval, stating that Dr. Prempeh's remarks were inappropriate and damaging to the party.
He expressed surprise that President Akufo-Addo had not addressed the issue or advised Dr. Prempeh to provide a sensible explanation.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe suggested that Dr. Bawumia should ask Dr. Prempeh to apologise, and if he refuses, he should be asked to resign. However, if NAPO does not resign, then Bawumia should consider resigning rather.
"That is why I say it is unfortunate. It has totally destroyed our party. I am surprised Akufo-Addo has not come out to condemn it or at least advise the running mate (Bawumia) to come out with a sensible explanation of why he said that," 3news.com quoted him to have said.
"If my running mate makes such a statement, there are two things I will do. I will ask him to apologise, and if he fails to do so, I will ask him to resign. If he does not resign, I will resign," he asserted.
The controversy stems from Dr. Prempeh's statement on July 9 at his official unveiling event in Kumasi, where he claimed that no president in Ghana's history, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has done more for the country's development than President Akufo-Addo.
